2016 Queensland Guineas the Target for Rangipo

April 12th, 2016

Tony Pike has been understandably thrilled with the results posted by Rangipo so far and has revealed the classy colt will cross the ditch for a 2016 Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign likely to be geared towards the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m).

Rangipo immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow upon debuting to racing in early 2015 but has continued to go from strength to strength this time on his way to a commendable race record of seven wins and a minor through twelve starts.

Having savaged the line for an impressive win over notable company in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) most recently on March 5th, Pike told The Courier Mail the Stryker gelding has taken plenty of benefit from his time in the paddock and will contest only two starts in Brisbane, peaking with the 2016 Queensland Guineas on Oaks Day.

“We will keep him to the shorter trips this time and then make a call after this carnival whether we have a shot at Melbourne or not,” Pike said.

Pike has experienced some success during the Brisbane winter previously, but failed to make anything of an impact through the 2015 edition of the carnival, most notably with multiple Group 1 winner Sacred Star failing to fire.

Pike will set Raghu and Provocative on courses towards the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) and Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) respectively this time, and is confident of atoning for the forgettable 2015 campaign.

“I’ve only been there two years. The first time around we won the QTC Cup with Sacred Star but last year was an absolute nightmare,” Pike said.

“Everything that could go wrong did, so hopefully the tide turns this time.”

Making a commendable transition to black type company when fourth in the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) on November 27th, Rangipo charged home to beat a talented field to the line in the Group 2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m) on New Year’s Day.

Unlucky to be hampered in running when third in the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m) on January 1600m, Rangipo won each of the Group 2 Waikato Guineas (2000m) and Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) on his way to success in the New Zealand Derby, in which he beat a number of notable opponents including subsequent Australian Derby champion Tavago.
